Meadow Bird Quartet for environmental education

Card game makes nature conservation knowledge more accessible

In 2023/24, the LIFE Limicodra project team developed its own quartet card game. With 33 lovingly designed playing cards, children, young people and adults can discover interesting facts about lapwings, redshanks, black-tailed godwits, snipe, curlews and other meadow birds in a fun and engaging way.

A card game with added value

The Meadow Bird Quartet was specifically designed for use in environmental education – for example in schools, during guided tours, or at public events. The aim is to introduce the younger generation to the fascinating world of meadow birds and inspire them to protect it.

Each of the 32 cards features a meadow bird, including all of the project's target species, and provides interesting facts such as:

  • Wingspan (in cm)
  • Weight (in g)
  • Body length (in cm)
  • Age (in years)
  • European population
  • Breeding pairs in Germany
  • Red List status

The game thus combines knowledge with entertainment – while also providing low-threshold access to the topic of nature conservation.

Quartet – a classic game with a new twist

Qartet is one of the most popular and simplest card games, which children in particular can learn quickly. One variation that can be played is the trump variant: the player with the highest (or lowest) value in a selected category wins the other player's card.

This creates an exciting contest over wingspan, weight or population size – while round by round not only the card pile grows, but also knowledge about the fascinating meadow birds of the Szczecin Lagoon and Western Pomerania.

Use in the project

Whether at school project days, guided field tours or public events: the Meadow Bird Quartet is a perfect addition to the LIFE Limicodra project’s environmental education activities. It sparks curiosity, conveys facts and figures, and encourages people to find out more about the featured species.
